Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father, who was a carnival barker, was killed when she was a small child, forcing her mother to provide for the family by working as waitress or cleaning lady. Ruth lived in a slum Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She went to school in Boston. She only attended school for two years before going on to pursue an acting career. The path she chose was filled with problems. After obtaining a position as a model in New York as a model for a magazine that dealt with detectives, she was unable to find opportunities in the stage. When she was employed as a hat-check girl at a nightclub she quit her job and moved back to Boston. She was in Boston in which she was employed during the evening as an actor for the New England Repertory Company and the rest of the time, was an usherette. She been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she was a drama student.
